Midterm elections will take place tomorrow, November 8, all across the country with one of the highest profile races being between Trudy Bush Valentine (D) and Eric Schmitt (R) for Missouri’s open Senate seat.

Recent polling by SurveyUSA showed Schmitt having an edge over Bush Valentine 50-41%, however, nearly 6% of Missourians self-reported as undecided creating possible conditions for a surprise win for Bush Valentine. According to the same polling numbers, Bush Valentine holds a solid lead in the Greater St. Louis area and the candidates are tied in the Kansas City area. However, the rest of the state appears to show solid leads for Schmitt. Among those certain to vote, but have not yet done so, Schmitt holds a solid lead of 53-39%, and among those almost certain to vote, his lead is 45-23%.

Still, Bush Valentine holds a significant lead for those voters who have already cast their votes with current ballots favoring Bush Valentine at 67% versus Schmitt’s 30%. Bush Valentine’s support continues to come from those who listed healthcare as their top issue; however, Schmitt’s supporters favor the economy, inflation, crime, and immigration among their top issues. Therefore, it appears this election will come down to the difference between those voters outraged over the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v Wade, versus those voters most outraged about inflation over the past year and the potential for a recession.

Considering the political climate of Missouri over the past decade, it is likely this race will end in Schmitt’s favor, however, Bush Valentine’s campaign has remained steady throughout the election and recent momentum coming from her ads showcasing Schmitt’s downfalls as Attorney General could create the conditions necessary for a Bush Valentine win.

While the main issue for Missourians coming into this election continues to be the economy, it appears Bush Valentine’s message on the economy and a focus on relatability did not resonate with voters throughout the state enough to overcome dissatisfaction with the current administration in the White House and fears of a looming recession as the country continues to balance an attempt to bounce back from the Covid-19 pandemic and the conflict going on between Russia and Ukraine, where the US has remained a key ally for Ukraine.

Bush Valentine has continued to address the economy throughout her campaign and has multiple sections on her website dedicated to tackling the issues facing the middle and lower class promising to fight the cost of groceries, gas, and basic household necessities from her first potential day in office. While the Schmitt campaign addresses the 2020 election and other issues not at the front of voters' minds, Bush Valentine has continued to tackle the issues that matter. However, the Schmitt campaign’s continued rhetoric of Bush Valentine being an out-of-touch billionaire heiress, means she has been cut off from a key voting demographic her platform would resonate with.

This blog has continued to highlight the Bush Valentine campaign throughout the election, including her solutions to inflation, crime, healthcare, abortion, education, and many of the other issues plaguing families throughout the state. We feel wholeheartedly it is Bush Valentine, not Eric Schmitt, who stands the best possible chance at addressing these issues and fighting for the families of Missouri each and everyday.
