Schmitt a No-Show After Accusing Valentine of “Refusing to Debate”

Eric Schmitt accused Trudy Busch Valentine of “refusing to debate” in a tweet last week, with his campaign twitter saying he “accepts debate.” This is obviously not the case, as Valentine joined Libertarian and Constitution party candidates for the Missouri Press Association’s candidate forum while Schmitt escaped to D.C.

It is important to note that forum details have been heavily debated by the candidates. Schmitt’s campaign accepted an invitation to the NextStar Media Group’s debate earlier this month, prompting him to tweet that Valentine refused to debate. However, Valentine’s primary spokesperson, Jacob Long, said in a news release that they “fully expect and look forward to an opportunity to debate Eric Schmitt on the issues that matter most to Missourians,” and that they “have rejected no debate invitations.”

In the end, Valentine decided to participate in the “preeminent debate for statewide candidates” – the Missouri Press Association’s forum, held today, September 16. With Schmitt in Washington earlier this week to meet senators and raise money, it’s obvious that putting Missourians first is not his top priority.

Updates from Valentine’s Twitter page reflected content from the debate, where she made statements on a variety of topics:

Making it Easier for Missourians to Vote

  • This may be a reference to the voting law that went into effect earlier this year. It requires voters to present a photo ID, and it limits the number of people individuals can register to vote.

Accessible Healthcare for Women

Recreational Marijuana

Accessible Higher Education

Valentine also took the opportunity to slam Schmitt for allowing "hundreds of thousands of acres of Missouri farmland to be bought up by Communist China."

In the end, it's easy to see which candidate will show up for Missourians and which candidate can't be bothered to put us first.
